Jewish Studies - Pre School
Our students start their Jewish studies journey from the first day of Kindergarten. Our smallest students are immersed in Hebrew language, Parashat Hashavua and Chagim. The pre-schoolers explore their Judaism through arts and crafts, stories and role play. It is wonderful to see them participate in Kabbalat Shabbat, model Sedarim and hearing the Shofar blown all through the month of Elul.
We are proud to have introduced the "Chalav U'Dvash" Hebrew program in both Junior and Senior Kindergarten. The program teachers the students Hebrew basics, making them ready for Hebrew literacy in primary school.
Jewish Studies - Primary School
In Prep, the students learn to read using the "Lamdeini" program and our goal is to have each child reading Hebrew fluently by the end of their first year in Primary school.
The Hebrew language is brought to life with the colourful, interactive Tal Am program. Through songs, workbooks, stories and charts the students become familiar and comfortable in reading, writing, speaking and listening in Hebrew.
Our Jewish studies curriculum is thorough and intensive. The students learn Chumash from Grade 2, and by the time they graduate from Primary school, have learned various parshiot from Berieshit, Shmot and Bamidbar. The weekly Parsha is taught and students are encouraged to share their knowledge with their family at the Shabbat table. The students come well prepared to the Yom Tov table too, having comprehensively learned about the Dinim and minhagim of each chag.
In upper primary school, students learn Mishna and Halacha.
The students learn in small classes, designed to cater for individual learning, ensuring that each child becomes a "Talmid Chacham"!
Jewish Studies - Secondary
During Tanach lessons, the students learn the text in Hebrew, and use various commentaries to analyse and interpret the text. The students are taught to question and grapple with the text and its difficulties, making it truly a "Torah Chaim" - a ‘living' text! The students learn various Parshiot from Bereishit, Shmot, Bamidbar and Devarim and cover several books in Nach.
The students also have the opportunity to learn advanced level Gemarah, Dinim, Hashkafah, Parsha and the Jewish yearly cycle. The lessons are interactive and inspirational!
As well as our formal curriculum, Yavneh boasts a brilliant Informal Jewish Studies department. Lead by Rabbi Benzion Hain, an ex-collegian, and together with our four Sheirut Leumi girls, the Informal department run regular programs for the students designed to increase their knowledge and awareness of up coming Chagim and events in Israel. The students look forward to Shabbatonim, Zionist camps and Hadracha Seminars run by our capable, and fun, informal department.
